16th May 2009 - Press Release - THE REAL ALTERNATIVE:

Liberal Democrats are mounting a strong challenge to overturn the Conservative majority in Northamptonshire County Council.

Out of the 73 seats up for election the Lib Dems are contesting 69 of them. This compares with 48 candidates fielded in 2005.

"The number of candidates we are standing reflects the growing strength of the Liberal Democrats" said Lib Dem County Group Leader, Brian Hoare. "We need 37 of them to win to take overall control of the council, and we believe that is possible"

"In the Daventry area we are looking at doing particularly well in "Woodford and Weedon," "Braunston" and "Long Buckby" where we have locally based candidates who are already active in their local communities.

"In the current political situation we believe that the electors will want to punish Labour for the incompetence of Gordon Brown's Government, and will also want to punish the Conservatives for the swingeing cuts to Community Services, Older Peoples Services, the Youth Service, and the failure to bring school standards up to the national average."

Cllr Brian Lomax, Chair of Daventry Liberal Democrats, stated “This is the first time that the Liberal Democrats have fought every seat in the constituency at a County Council election. It reflects the growing strength and effectiveness of our party in this area, where we are now the Official Opposition to the Tories, ahead of Labour, on Daventry District Council.”

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE, 15 MAY 2009.

Daventry Liberal Democrats met at Long Buckby Community Centre on 8 May to select a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the next General Election. The candidate chosen is JOHN LATHAN.

John lives in the constituency, at Kilsby, where he is a Parish Councillor and Chair of the Planning Committee. He fought the Thurrock constituency for the Liberal Democrats at the 2001 General Election.

John has given his long-term commitment to fight and win this seat for the Liberal Democrats. Due to boundary changes, Daventry is no longer the safe Conservative seat it used to be. His emphasis will be on empowering local communities to take the decisions which affect their lives.

After his adoption, John said “I am proud to have been chosen to contest Daventry for the Liberal Democrats. I aim to fight this seat to win, however long it takes, and to provide true local representation for Daventry in Parliament. I am not waiting for the gravy train. My purpose is not to serve myself, but to serve those who elect me to Parliament, and to work for radical change in our society.”

John can be contacted on 07906 835046, and on j.lathan2007@btinternet.com. For further information please contact the Returning Officer, Cllr Tony Theaker, on tony@aldmail.co.uk.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE, Saturday 22nd March 2008

Daventry Liberal Democrats will be contesting the Daventry District Council Elections on May 1st, 2008, in more wards than ever before. For the first time, last year the Liberal Democrats became the official Opposition to the Tories, with more seats than Labour. This year, we are seeking further advances, and have published a Manifesto for the whole of the Daventry District. A copy of this Manifesto is attached herewith.

Councillor Catherine Lomax, Liberal Democrat group leader, launching the Manifesto, said today:- “We do not believe in opposition for its own sake – that is the old politics. We are prepared to support the other parties’ policies where we believe they are right and for the benefit of the people of this District; but we also reserve the right to oppose when necessary.”

“In our Manifesto, we have set out our priorities and our programme. We welcome debate on these proposals, because it is through debate that we can find the best solutions for all our local communities, both urban and rural.”

“We are putting up more candidates than ever before at these elections, and we are already campaigning in many parts of the District. We will be pleased to hear from anyone who wishes to know more about what we stand for, and will send a free copy of our Manifesto to anyone who requests one. We look forward to meeting as many of our residents as possible during this election campaign.”
